| Description & Notes | Gravestone of Joseph Mayhew (1709/10-1782), oldest son of Simon Mayhew. Notice the use of the cherub and the elaborate scrolls on the stone. Simon Mayhew (1687-1753)is the youngest brother of Experience Mayhew, author of INDIAN CONVERTS. Joseph never married but was a leader of the patriots in the Revolutionary period. He graduated from Harvard in 1730 (Banks HMV III.306). As the stone notes, Joseph's career included being a tutor at Harvard, a Preacher, and Chief Justice of Dukes County. Joseph is buried in Abel's Hill Cemetery on Martha's Vineyard houses near the graves of Experience Mayhew, other members of the Mayhew family, and comedian John Belushi. |
